"Come in." Definitely feminine.

Alain Martin entered in his graceful elegance. He was there to show her he was no ordinary man. No ordinary vampire either. This woman who hides in her fortress, she was also hiding from her sons.

"Mr. Martin, glad to have met you and I hope this will be the last time we meet like this." She was a woman who went straight to the point.

The Vampire in him saw through the darkly lit room. She was standing beside the curtain, her back to him. There was nothing outside the windows but walls of vines. Everything was dark. But he was born in the dark. She thinks to hide in it? Not to him. To Alain’s eyes, she was standing as bright as day.

They were in the ground floor at the west wing. His employer was looking at nothing but walls. She clearly didn’t want to face him. She was imperious but anti-social. Her hair was deep gold with shades of tamarind and mahogany. He relished the colors, the texture.

Something in her chimed like the softest bell. He heard it clearly in the dark bleakness. Using his third eye, he looked at the woman carefully. There, within her heart was a beating red glow. It matched the shade of his red glowing heart. This woman! He had to have this woman! He was her soulmate! There’s no other reason why he’s feeling the way he is. She had his half of the soul.

Alain stared at her. She definitely was! How fortunate, he thought. This tingling feeling he felt was nothing like how his father described. There was something wild and warm in him that wanted to burst and pour out into her. He had to know more about her.

“I hope this will not be the last time we meet. That would be a shame.”

The Guardian Lore

In 2020AD, the Creatures of Myths and Legends had come out and revealed itself to the world. Emotions were mixed and not all of these mythical beings were accepted. Of course, there were those who were romanticized and were readily accepted. The Guardians, known to many as Vampires, were among the beings readily accepted.

The creatures have bonded together under one flag to fight for their rights. They were known as Mythicans. There were many types but are categorized to three kinds: Beings, Humans and Animals. Beings were creatures like dwarves, Elves, Guardians, demons, etc. They have a different DNA from the rest of the populace. Mythicans classified under Humans are those with human blood and human forms. These creatures are werewolves and shifters, witches, warlocks, etc. Animals are creatures of myths who share animal characteristics like Dragons, Chimeras, gryphon, etc.

The Soulless

The Soulless are creatures transformed from Guardians. When they chose to lose their soul, they turn into a demonic being. A Soulless can lose their soul by consciously giving it up or if they dabbled in black magic. Although all Guardians have innate powers they call talents, some still crave for more. The lure of the darkness is always ever present to a Guardian but it is up to them if they choose to heed this call. All Guardians have a duty to defeat and kill a Soulless.

Chapter One

The Bodyguard/Manny

He was a bodyguard and a lifeguard. Whatever he was, he was a Guardian. Alain Martin exited the water. The brine fell cascading from his muscled body. Each drop tried to linger a bit longer on his well-defined abs. The scene he made kept women drooling in the beach front. They described him as the Adonis of Lifeguards, the height of male perfection. Not a scar or malformation of his evenly tanned skin. The sun has just set giving him a milky ethereal glow.

Time to get to work, he told himself. Alain was a night shift life guard. Some people were foolish enough to swim in the night of the town of Afritadia, a small barrio-like place near the city. So, the coastguard hired lifeguards for the evening. It was a perfect job for Alain. He was awake at night, asleep at day. The harmful rays of the sun would not be able to reach him. Humans, he mused. They were such fascinating creatures. They loved to do the things that were forbidden. As for Alain, he was what the twenty-first century would call a good boy. If not for his occasional blood-sucking, he would almost be perfect.

The politically correct term was Guardian. Still, people persisted to call them Vampires. Yes, life for a Vampire was no longer easy. They were getting lesser and lesser soulmates and they had no idea where to get compatible humans. There was a certain type of woman that would be a vampire’s soulmate. For one thing, the human would have to contain half his soul. Alain had to find the right woman, the woman who had his half. To her, he would give his heart, his life and the rest of his soul. In her will be his salvation. With her, he will share his existence.

His four-hour shift came and went. It was time to go to his next job. It was merely a sideline to interact with humans. He needed to blend in. Well, as blended as a Mythican or Creature of Legend could be. Not many would hire someone like him. Of course, there were seedy dark businesses that would hire him at the drop of the hat. They would definitely pay more. But that wasn’t the kind of life Alain wanted. He wanted a quiet existence while he waited for his soulmate. He wanted a clean and “blended” life with humans.

Alain’s second job was a "manny." Manny or male nannies were a new but in-demand job in today's modern world. He remembered there was a time when only females could be nannies and governesses. His job was a bit of an all-around guy. He had to baby-sit, watch and protect two young boys for a single multi-millionaire mother. “Whatever it takes to keep them safe,” his employer’s e-mail stated.

As a manny, Alain was mainly a babysitting body guard. It really pays to have a vampire body guard. For one thing, he wouldn’t fall asleep on the job. Another thing, he had heightened senses at his disposal. Night vision, sensitive hearing and strong olfactory were his arsenals. Not to mention sharp nails, fast healing and super strength. Not many could boast having a vampire body guard.

And of course, vampires have special skills, known only to the chosen select. Alain was grateful his family had special skills. Many called it magic. Some called is psychic. But vampires are not allowed to use magic. So they rely on these special skills.

The house seemed quiet as usual. Quiet to the outside world. Alain could hear noise from the windows of the second level. The mansion was huge. It was encompassed by a large sprawling garden. His employer was rich. They never met but he could judge her taste by the things inside.

Carlos, the butler, let him in through the side door. "The monsters are not in a mood. Apparently, their mami had not given them the ice cream they were promised."

Alain went to the south wing of the palatial home. This wing was dedicated to everything for the children. They were home-schooled in this wing and they did their recreation here as well. He was greeted by ruckus and toys smashing.

The two boys had wrecked the room. No day nanny was in sight. She’d be back to inspect the damage tomorrow. Alain waited until the children noticed his presence. Normally, ordinary humans couldn’t but there was nothing ordinary about Rodolfo and Joaquin.

"Are you done?" He asked calmly.

Rodolfo had marking pen drawings on his face. The bed sheet tied around his neck had similar patterns drawn on them. Joaquin had the marking pen on his hand and his dinner on the floor.

"Alym! Alym!" Rodolfo jumped up and down excited his favorite person had arrived. He had a hard time pronouncing Alain's name.

"Joaquin, is that your mother's sheets on you? Boys, is that your dinner on the floor?" He pointed other things they have done.

Shamed at what they had done, the boys settled down but started to cry. "I-I'm sorry, Alain. We were angry Mami forgot about our ice cream date! Now she'll never get us ice cream." Joaquin, the elder cried. He was six but smart and very mischievous.

"I know you wanted to hurt your Mami's feelings, but why do you also hurt Rosita's feelings by throwing her cooking on the floor and Tessing by making her clean this mess tomorrow?" Alain knew precisely what to say to the boys.

"Please, Alym. We're hungry. Promise—sob, sob—we won't do it again. We'll clean it up," Rodolfo said. They looked to the floor in shame.

"I will see to cleaning your mother's sheets but I want this room spick and span. We will then go down stairs and say sorry to Rosita and Tessing." The boys agreed and started to pick up their mess.

Alain got the sheets and went to the bathroom to wash the sheets. Marking pens were permanent but his Vampire talent only required him to wave his hands. Another of the vampire talents was bending of the laws of simple physics. Nothing major but the trivial things they could do seemed to awe normal humans. He waited a while pretending to wash to sheets while the boys were busy cleaning up. The sheets had a beautiful smell. It was warm and feminine. It was definitely a woman's scent. Alain was startle to feel pleasure. The scent awoke sleeping emotions in him, emotions towards women. He didn’t really feel for a woman in centuries, afraid choosing the wrong one and losing his soul along with his heart. But this scent and feeling made him tingle. He really should get to know his employer.

After the boys cleaned up, they went to the kitchen to apologize to the cook and maid. Rosita and Tessing were so pleased they made the boys some sandwiches.

"Now, have you finished your homework?" Alain asked them.

Rodolfo groaned. "But it's a Friday. Professor Sina won't come back until Monday." The children were homeschooled. They would not blend with the outside world. Alain tried to help with their homework as much as he could.

"Yes, but that means there will be something you must do before Sunday. Why not finish it now? I'll help the two of you." And so Alain did. Nobody would believe six-year-old and five-year-old boys doing Algebra. The family lived in the mansion and they never went out. The eccentric millionaire Alexis Salvador was so recluse, not even Alain has seen her. Only Carlos the butler and the two boys saw her. Barely.

The two boys sat in their small stools in front of their colored plastic tables. They opened their workbooks and started to do their homework. The vampire hovered over, looking at their progress.

"Good work," Alain praised. He looked at his watch. It was a little after eleven. The children wanted to stay up late because it was a weekend the next day. "Let's have some ice cream, then."

For purposes of looking human, he had a bike. Silently, he spirited the boys the back way and led them to his bike. A little time out is what they need. He took the boys out once in a while just so they would experience the outside world while still being children. Alain remembered his childhood days. Back then, vampires together with the rest of the Mythican folk weren’t accepted in society. They had to sneak out and pretend to be humans. His father took him out once in a while, to experience the modern world.

The ice cream parlor was well-lit. It was open 'til late so Alain thought to bring the boys here. Rodolfo and Joaquin ordered a chocolate and strawberry Sunday each. They were more enamored with the Sundays than being outside. It wasn’t their first time out of the mansion but it was their first time in the ice cream parlor. Alain thought it would be good to expose them little by little to different places.

“I love you, Alym. I wish you were our papa,” Rodolfo said.

“Yes. I wish you were our papa. You’d be there with us all the time,” Joaquin agreed.

“But I am a vampire. Did you know vampires sleep during the day? We aren’t allowed to walk in the sun.” Alain knew the children know about the Creatures of Legend. It’s been part of the general education since a lot of them have integrated into society. Day-walking creatures such as witches, sirens and some shifters have always integrated with humans. Now, more of them are letting their presence be known.

“Well, can’t you make us vampires?” They looked at him expectantly.

Alain shook his head. “I’m afraid it doesn’t work that way.”

“It’s okay. We’ll guard your secret resting crypt,” the boys offered. It was clear they had attached themselves to Alain. “Can you fly? Do you suck necks?”

Alain wanted to laugh. Vampires don’t usually sleep in crypts. No, they were modern creatures. They owned blackout drapes in very modern pads. His own pad was a brick villa but the interiors were very modern. It had flat screen TV, LED lights and state-of-the-art securities.

“I can’t fly just jump high. Although, I have a friend who is an Eagle Shifter. He can fly even in human form. As for suck necks, no. I get my blood supply in bottles.”

His cell phone rang. The screen registered Carlos. Now, how had that butler known he was out? He probably checked on the boys and discovered their disappearance. Alain sighed. "Ola, Carlos."

"Good Evening, Sir Alain. Miss Salvador would like the boys back please and request that you meet her in her private study," Carlos said cheerfully. Alain never knew what made Carlos always cheerful. He was always tired and at the family's beck and call for twenty-four hours. It must be the fat paycheck, the vampire thought. But his baiting his employer seemed to work.

"Finish your ice cream, boys. Your mother wants you in bed already," Alain told the boys.

They protested and whined. Alain had to make it clear that they would have more outings if they obeyed and finished their ice cream. There was no arguing Alain. It had been fun. They were hopeful this would not be the last time.

Poor boys, Alain thought. He felt pity for them. All they wanted was a chance to be happy, to go out and feel normal. There was nothing normal in that household and Alain thought this was the perfect night to find out.

Chapter Two

The Employer

The boys were tucked in bed in the room. They each had a separate room but Joaquin didn’t want to sleep alone thus, they converged in Rodolfo’s room every evening. Alain turned on the night lamp and left the door a crack open. That was mostly what he did, made sure they went to bed and nothing disturbs their night’s sleep. Tomorrow would be another night.

Carlos waited patiently by the door. “I do not know how you can handle those boys, Sir Alain. You just have a way with them.”

“Must be the fangs,” Alain joked.

Carlos led him to a hand carved oak door. The brass knobs alone must have cost a fortune. But he was not there to look at the door. He was to finally see the woman who employed him. Finally! He’s never seen her or seen her face. All he got was a printed letter of acceptance for his job post. For all he knew, it was Carlos writing the letter. There was a matching brass knocker. He used it to knock. The wood had a mechanical clicking as it parted and opened for him. It was strangely old fashioned. Most knockers were in the front door but Miss Salvador’s private wing had its own knocker.

"Come in." Definitely feminine.

Alain Martin entered in his graceful elegance. He was there to show her he was no ordinary man. No ordinary vampire either. This woman who hides in her fortress, she was also hiding from her sons. Normally, he wouldn’t impose his opinions on his employer’s lives but he had come from a loving family and he knew it was important to a child’s psyche to have their parents near them. He was going to tell her how her children needed her.

"Mr. Martin, glad to have met you and I hope this will be the last time we meet like this." She was a woman who went straight to the point.

The Vampire in him saw through the darkly lit room clearly. She was standing beside the curtain, her back to him. There was nothing outside the windows but a wall of vines. Everything was dark. But he was born in the dark. She thinks to hide in it? Not to him. To Alain’s eyes, she was standing as bright as day.

They were in the ground floor of the west wing. She clearly didn’t want to face him. First impression, she was imperious but anti-social. Her hair was deep gold with shades of tamarind and mahogany. He relished the colors, the texture.

Something in her chimed like the softest bell. He heard it clearly in the dark bleakness. Something…

… … …

There it was again! His senses weren’t deceiving him! He heard it correctly. This chiming in her soul. No, in his soul! Using his third eye, he looked at the woman carefully. There, within her heart was a beating red glow. It matched the shade of his red glowing heart. This woman! He had to have this woman! She was his fated soulmate! There’s no other reason why he’s feeling the way he is. She had his half of the soul.

Guardians, now called vampires only had half a soul. One a human or a Mythican with enough human blood can contain their half of their soul. A vampire has to look for this human. If he failed, he was going to hell, for no being can enter heaven with half or no soul.

It was often difficult to find your soulmate. Impossible for some. There should be the right woman to carry this extra soul. But because of this soul, the woman will have extra talents.

Sometimes, fate would lend a helping hand. His soulmate would definitely meet him within his lifetime. It was up to the vampire how he would woo the human and merge their souls together.

Alain stared at her. She definitely was his soulmate! How fortunate, he thought. This tingling feeling he felt was nothing like how his father described. There was something wild and warm in him that wanted to burst and pour out into her. He had to know more about her.

“I hope this will not be the last time we meet. That would be a shame.” He was turning on his charms. While some women might call it vampiric charm, it was simply flirting 101. He flashed his fangs for her benefit. He knew the glass pane would reflect it.

She sniffed and ignored his flirtation. “You are here to protect my children within my home. If you do not have my approval—”

"Why do you hide even from your sons?" He blurted out his question before she even finished her sentence. He couldn’t help it. There was something about her he wanted to taste, to bite, to love.

"Excuse me!" She was outraged. Did anybody question her before?

Alain needed to let her see him, her family and possibly the world. "You hide your pretty face from the world and even your sons. They feel much neglected. Why can such a woman like you hide? And why do you hide them as well?"

"How dare you!" She turned to him and glared. Alexis Salvador was truly a beauty. Her face was angular and her nose high but her skin was tan and her eyes dark. She was a mixture of breeds, very alluring.

"Ah, that's better. See? You should never hide from the world. Such beauty must be shared." He could see her face reddened.

Alain could feel a probe in his mind but he wouldn't let her enter. It was not yet time. So, she had talents too. Most humans who has vampiric souls had special skills. He was going to explore this woman and make her his. But first, he would make her realize it.

"Do you think you should continue working here, Mr. Martin?" She dared him.

He took a step forward. "Yes. As a matter of fact, you need me."

"Why do I need you?"

"Because the boys are quite attached to me and I need to show you how to come out of your shell and live a little." He smiled, something he was not able to do in a while. For good measure, he let his fangs show.

"Why do I need to come out of my shell? I like it here just fine," she said coldly. She too had a block in her mind indicating she was telekinetic or a magic-user. Alain could tell she had been using her talents for a while. What else could dear Miss Salvador do? He was intrigued. Humans who bore their halves has some special ability. The vampiric soul made sure that carriers or soulmates had an advantage of preserving themselves from danger. Special abilities enabled them to be distinguished by their half or at least protect themselves until their mates came to claim them. These talents would include but not limited to telekinesis, heightened senses, speed, agility and heightened magic enhancements for those with Fae blood. But some humans have evolved and their powers or talents evolved with circumstances and family history. Miss Salvador seems to have telekinesis but he was sure she had more.

"You need to come out some time for I am at the other side of your walls," he sang.

She snubbed him. “Keep dreaming, vampire.”

"I will.”

She cleared her throat, not to be distracted by him. “As I was saying, I do not want the boys taken out of the mansion without my permission. They are safe in here and that’s how I like it. If it is not ok with you, you can hand in your resignation.” She went one back to work table without giving him a second glance. “Clear?”

He sighed, “I hear you but will you give them time to explore outside these walls? Maybe you could come with them and stretch out.”

“I’ll think about it.” But it sounded like a no. “If that’s all, good night, then.”
